In the picturesque town of San Miguel de Allende, the glass studios of Rose Ann and Charlie Hall are breathing new life into an ancient trade. With the help of local apprentices, many of whom are physically challenged like Charlie himself, these master glassmiths design and create one-of-a-kind serving pieces that are inspired by Rose Ann’s 35-year love affair with Mexico and its people. The Halls and their artisans are unmistakable masters of their craft. Their Etched Green Glasses are created from hand-blown glass in a detailed, labor-intensive process. It takes up to six months to train an artisan in the etching method, an art known as grabado, and each piece produced takes 30 minutes to etch. The design is applied to a pitcher by first drawing a girasol—or sunflower—on the glass surface in chalk, then hand etching the design. Based on French influences dating back to the 1800s, this is a vanishing art form that the dedicated artisans at Rose Ann Hall are keeping alive in their beautiful and unique pieces.
