All the vibrant colors of lush summer fruits right on your table. This glorious, 100% cotton textile from Mercado Global combines the colors of ripe apples, oranges, grapes, lemons, limes, blueberries, and raspberries into an 84" table runner. Long end tassels will flutter in the slightest breeze. The reference to a fiesta in this table runner’s description is no accident—it makes any day a celebration! Hand woven in Guatemala by women artisans, this table runner is a modern translation of traditional Mayan craftsmanship.
Women artisans in Guatemala weave as they have for hundreds of years, using a back-strap loom. The reason the back-strap loom has remained in use so long is because it is functional and portable. One end of the loom is tied to a tree or other stable object and the other end is tied around the woman's waist; with the long warp threads in place, the woman is now in a position to weave. These vibrant textiles have been hand woven by Guatemalan women artisans to grace your table with a touch of Latin American color.
Ruth DeGolia and Benita Singh founded Mercado Global to connect rural Latin American artisan groups (primarily formed by women) to U.S. companies with the goal of securing for these local artisans a large distribution network for their products. Today, Mercado Global provides fair wage income to hundreds of artisans and their dependents. By purchasing a Mercado Global product, you are helping to empower women and promote social change in rural Latin America.
