Whereas a cameo is a relief image raised higher than its background, an intaglio is the opposite: a carving into a background, creating a recessed image. Each of Extasia’s intaglios is made by hand in a small Bavarian village using original steel molds and traditional techniques developed in the 1800s. In these jet intaglio earrings, the ancient art of creating intaglios is shown off to perfection against simple, classic metalwork. All Extasia designs are conceived and constructed by hand in the company’s northern California workshop.
