As the Far East's center of artistry, the city attracted master craftsmen, fine tailors, opera singers, musicians, dancers, and poets from around the world. Privileged life was vibrant with dancing, gambling, lawlessness, opium dens, and social clubs. The exuberance of that opulent era eventually fell away when the political winds shifted, but is evident inspiration in the contemporary collections of Forgotten Shanghai.
