The inspiration behind this particular design can be traced to the kitchens of India, where simple, light meals—or "tiffins"—are prepared and delivered daily to schoolchildren and office workers. The city of Mumbai has a particularly unique method of shuttling tiffin boxes back and forth across its streets each day. In a tradition that dates back over a hundred years, families employ professional "dabbawalas"—or lunchbox delivery men—to convey fresh meals to loved ones at work or school. Via an intricate but surprisingly efficient network across the city, dabbawalas collect homemade meals from suburban homes, deliver them to their respective recipients within the city, then return each empty box back to its proper residence to be used the next day.
