In Greek mythology, Amethystos was changed to white stone by Artemis to be spared from the amorous advances of Dionysus. In his passion, Dionysus poured wine over her statue, giving the amethyst its deep purple coloring. Any modern goddess will swoon over this bracelet. An oval pale purple cameo is surrounded by two round amethyst intaglios, two square purple glass beads, and then completed with two smaller pale purple intaglios. All are set in red bronze with intricate metalwork and finished with a lobster claw clasp. Whereas a cameo is a relief image raised higher than its background, an intaglio is the opposite: a carving into a background, creating a recessed image. Each of Extasia’s cameos and intaglios is made by hand in a small Bavarian village using original steel molds and traditional techniques developed in the 1800s. In this dramatic bracelet, a cameo and several intaglios are shown off to perfection against delicate, classic red bronze metalwork.
All Extasia designs are conceived and constructed by hand in the company’s northern California workshop. When Stefanie Freydont founded Extasia in 1991, she envisioned a line of jewelry that reflected “classic beauty and old-world craftsmanship,” but was also fashion forward, demonstrating “fresh and timeless aplomb.”
